Ethics
and TaeKwonDo
Ethics
are a component of the utmost importance in all Martial Arts, and
that is especially true for TaeKwonDo. Respect, Loyalty and Morality
are of the most importance to TaeKwonDo and are expressed daily
in the life of the TaeKwonDo student.
| Training
of TaeKwonDo shapes not only the physical aspects of the body,
but more importantly it goes deep into the soul. Balance and
harmony with oneself as well as nature are the most basic principles
in the TaeKwonDo knowledge book. This balance is gained with
the control of both good and evil (the concept of Ying Vs. Yang
found in so many philosophy and religious teachings from the
Far East). The ability to recognize both Ying and Yang forces
gives the TaeKwonDo student the ability to know how to behave
in all situations. The idea that TaeKwonDo is merely a collection
of self-defense techniques, or a means to achieve superiority
over others could not be any further from the Truth. TaeKwonDo
is a way of life. The respect relationship between master and
student goes beyond the confines of the Dojang (TaeKwonDo gym)
and expresses itself in respect towards others. Humility is
another quality the serious student will possess. Although TaeKwonDo
boosts self-confidence it should not reflect itself in a sense
of superiority towards others. The true student will avoid confrontation
at all costs and only make use of its skills on others in self-defense. |

TaeKwonDo
Etiquette's
TaeKwonDo has a general set of rules, or codes, which all students
must follow. These codes are strongly influenced by Buddishm and
are reflected in the modern 'Commandments of TaeKwonDo'. The influence
on the modern commandments comes from the Hwarans Do code of honor:
|
The modern commandments
of TaeKwonDo are used as a guide for moral development. No student that
does not fully understand and live these tenets can ever hope to master
the true essence of TaeKwonDo. The twelve commandments of TaeKwonDo are:
1.
Loyalty to your country
2. Respect your parents
3. Faithfulness to your spouse
4. Respect you brothers and sisters
5. Loyalty to your friends
6. Respect your elders
7. Respect your teachers
8. Never take life unjustly
9. Indomitable spirit
10. Loyalty to your school
11. Finish what you begin
12. Say no to drugs and no to smoking |
